Numbers 32:37

Bible Verse

“And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,” – Numbers 32:37 (KJV)

Reflection

The verse from Numbers 32:37 might at first read as just a historical account or record of locations rebuilt by the Reubenites. However, when we peel back its layers, we can uncover a profound lesson applicable to our lives as we reflect on God’s promises, love, and our own journeys.

In the larger context of Numbers 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, choosing not to enter the Promised Land of Canaan with the rest of the Israelites, instead decide to settle east of the Jordan River on land suitable for their livestock. This might seem counterintuitive considering Canaan was the land promised by God, but their choice speaks to the diversity in God’s plans for each of us. It’s an invitation to reflect on how God’s guidance might manifest differently in our lives compared to others. God’s ultimate promise of providence and land was not forsaken, but rather fulfilled in a unique manner for the Reubenites.

Seeing the Reubenites rebuild cities such as Heshbon and Elealeh serves as a reminder of the immense potential for creation and renewal in our lives. While on the surface these are mere geographical settlements, they metaphorically represent the restoration and growth God can foster within us. There are times our paths may differ from what is perceived as “the standard”, but faith’s journey is rarely a one-size-fits-all. Perhaps like the Reubenites, we have faced decisions that require staying behind in familiar territories instead of launching into the unknown with others. In these moments, let this verse encourage us to discern God’s personal calling and trust that He is leading each of us to build and prosper where we are.

Moreover, there is a sense of hope and grace embedded in the act of building anew. God invites us to survey our lives, our desires, and our resources, and to courageously build cities in our hearts that align with His goodness. Just as the Reubenites took charge of their space and molded it into something new, we, too, can be architects in God’s kingdom, constructing lives full of purpose and faith.

Yet, let us remember, even in the building of these cities, the emphasis is not solely on the physical or material accomplishments but on the spiritual growth and the relationships cultivated in the process. God’s love is found in the foundation of every wall we build, His grace in every stone we lay, and His hope in the journey we embark on. Each step, whether small or large, is taken within His love and guidance.

Closing Thought

While our paths may be as diverse as the tribes of Israel, God’s love meets us wherever we choose to build and grow. His grace ensures that whether we journey forward into new territories or cultivate our given land, we are part of His greater promise. Trust in the divine purpose He has set for you, and know that you are an essential part of God’s unfolding story. May we find confidence and peace in constructing lives that reflect His glory, wherever we are placed.
